Our infrastructure

The entire microfluidic universe under one roof

At microfluidic ChipShop, we provide the full infrastructure required for the development, fabrication, and validation of Lab-on-a-Chip devices, all within a single building complex. In addition to specialized production and laboratory areas, our facilities include dedicated spaces for conferences and training, enabling knowledge transfer and collaboration. We also offer laboratory and office space for guest scientists and development partners, creating an environment that fosters innovation, close cooperation, and streamlined project workflows from concept to final product.

Ultraprecision of mold inserts

Precision mechanics

Design data, created by our CAD/CAM team to meet customer requirements, is transformed into parts and tools using our precision and ultra-precision milling and turning machines.

Tooling, mold inserts, and precision-milled polymer or metal components are manufactured to the highest standards in our in-house workshop. When tolerances are measured in microns, environmental stability becomes critical. That’s why our ultra-precision machining area is housed in a climate-controlled environment and features vibration-isolated foundations to ensure maximum accuracy and repeatability during the machining process.

Injection molding

Injection molding

This is where the magic happens! In our injection molding facilities, we produce microfluidic chips from various thermoplastic materials, replicating mold insert masters to create channel networks at the microscale.

A wide selection of standard tools is available to replicate your microfluidic chip across various formats, offering flexibility and efficiency during development and production. All injection molding processes are carried out in a temperature-controlled cleanroom environment, ensuring consistent high quality and precision for every component produced.

Spotting

Back-end processing

Most Lab-on-a-Chip systems require several back-end processing steps to achieve a high-quality product. Therefore, at microfluidic ChipShop, these steps are carried out in our class 7 cleanroom.

We routinely perform key post-fabrication processes such as surface functionalization, integration of wet and dry reagents, spotting, assembly and packaging. To ensure industrial-grade quality control, these activities are supported by advanced optical inspection tools — including confocal white light interferometers and high-precision stereo microscopes — as well as functional fluidic testing stations, allowing for comprehensive evaluation of both structural and functional aspects of the final products.

System development

System development & manufacturing

Our mechanical and electrical engineers develop customer-specific instrumentation for all fields of microfluidics-based products, which can be validated in our application labs.

In addition to the development and assembly of instrumentation for your Lab-on-a-Chip system, we also provide support in readout analysis and graphical user interface (GUI) design, ensuring seamless interaction between hardware, data acquisition, and end-user experience.

RD_1

R&D Department

One of microfluidic ChipShop’s USPs is our large and very well-equipped R&D area. Our R&D team consisting of engineers, biologists and natural scientists, is here to help our customers with on-chip assay development services.

Our team offers expert support in the development of assay protocols, reagent storage strategies, and surface modification techniques. To facilitate this, we maintain a range of dedicated laboratories, including facilities for cell culture, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, blood handling, and more. These labs are equipped with advanced tools such as spotting systems, PCR machines, lyophilizers, various imaging platforms, and electrophoresis stations, enabling flexible and application-specific development.

In addition, our microfluidics instrumentation labs, located within our dedicated R&D department, are used not only for developing our own ChipGenie® instrument series, but also for conducting validation experiments focused on the microfluidic characterization of components and systems.
